Petzl SDW100 2014 Race Report

In the lead up to the 2014 Petzl South Downs Way 100, the team behind the scenes had worked harder than ever to ensure the event laid on was as perfect as possible to create the best support and conditions possible for a fast race. The few days before this years event were hot and humid, but with a big thunderstorm which ended just prior to race start, the air cleared and a slightly cooler day and night presented themselves to the starting field of 239 runners. That number made this our biggest ever…

NDW50 2014 Race Report

Back in 2011, the NDW50 was our first ever Centurion event, held alongside 100 and marathon distance options. The course has remained unchanged in that time aside from the final 200 metres through Knockholt Pound village. Over the previous 4 years we’ve seen excellent weather each time, and this year was no different. 195 runners gathered at the trail head in Farnham on race morning, faced with 50 hot and hilly point to point miles. The route has plenty of flatter runnable sections but with a blend…

TP100 2014 Race Report

In 2012 and 2013, the Thames Path 100 was fated with appalling conditions at some stage of each race. Traditionally taking place in March, we made the call after excessive flooding over countless weeks and months, to shift the event to the first bank holiday in May and finally we were blessed with almost perfect running conditions for the third edition of the event. 227 runners registered early Saturday morning in Richmond-Upon-Thames, 107 returning Centurion runners and 120 new to our races, all…

Piece of String 2013 Race Report

This was one of the more epic weekends we’ve had at Centurion Running. Handling two races covering about 230 miles of trail and 103 runners spread up and down the countryside was hard work and required a big team to handle, but it turned out to be worth every ounce of energy. First, the Piece of String…. James Adams (co - RDs) blog posts on the event are here. You MUST read the relevant posts if you are at all interested in this event. In fact, just read his whole blog anyhow, it's worth it. The…

Winter 100 2013 Race Report

In 2012, torrential rains leading up to the race, wiped out half of the Thames Path and part of the Ridgeway sections of our course. This year the course received little rain in the fortnight before, and was largely dry, mud free and as fast as anyone could have hoped come race day. In the pre-race preview, I singled Ed Catmur and Sharon Law out as the two favourites, both with long race pedigrees behind them. Ed in particular we knew could do something special on the right day, having blitzed the…

NDW100 2013 Race Report

Sitting close to London, the NDW mirrors the South Downs Way, running from West to East across the country, from Farnham to Dover. The 100 starts at the far Western trail head and stops 102.6 miles east of there in the village of Wye, and is a tough event. Clearly, covering 100 miles on foot in one continuous movement (or close to) isn’t a straightforward proposition, but the North Downs Way is a much more difficult trail to negotiate than it may at first appear. The constant winding nature, changing…

Petzl SDW100 2013 Race Report

The 2013 Petzl South Downs Way 100 was epitomised by blazing fast times, perfect running conditions and an unrivalled level of camaraderie between 190 runners and 90 volunteers making it a most memorable weekend for all involved. The idea of reversing the direction of the course to travel from West to East from the old SDWR route, was to allow runners a better chance of a following wind given that the downs more regularly experience a strong westerly blowing across the ridge. We couldn’t ever have…

NDW50 2013 Race Report

This past weekend saw the 3rd annual North Downs Way 50 take place. Starting out in Farnham, Surrey, runners would make their way from the NDW western trailhead, to Knockholt Pound in Kent, 50 miles further east. During the past two editions of the race, runners had been treated to good weather and fast conditions, but with a slightly overcast day and cool but not cold temperatures, 2013 race day was set up for some very fast times. We couldn’t have anticipated just how fast however. Both the mens…

SDW50 2013 Race Report: A Tale of Two Races

The South Downs Way 50 was the only new addition to our race calendar for 2013. The SDW remains my favourite UK trail and the intention was to create a race out of the eastern end of that route, giving runners the opportunity to see what I believe to be the best parts of the trail, as well as providing the SDW100 runners a chance to run th last 45 miles of the course, supported, prior to the longer event in June. The runners gathered for registration in bright sunshine down in Worthing, as the weather…

Thames Path 100 2013 Race Report

It's always difficult to sum up the experience of running, crewing or volunteering at a 100 miler. This was undoutbedly the most challenging week we've ever faced at Centurion. I was quite calm until Monday morning. At that point our careful eye on the river levels which had been in recession after one of the wettest years on record, was caught by the Henley River Cam which showed the levels beginning to rise over the path adjacent to the bridge.  The river in flood To cut a long story short, the…

Winter 100 2012 Race Report

The runners and volunteers at the inaugural Winter 100, endured torrid conditions for over 24 hours of the 30 hour event, but battled through to the bitter end, embodying the spirit of ultra running. The format for the race was a series of out and backs utilising the Thames Path and Ridgeway National Trails. Streatley and Goring are uniquely situated on the confluence of both National Trails, offering up a course consisting of 4 different 25 mile out and back spurs, each covering a new section of…

NDW 2012 Race Report

Almost exactly a year after the first ever Centurion Running event, we were back where we’d started on the North Downs Way for our 4th race. One significant change over 2011 was the omission of the marathon distance as we focused instead on allowing more runners to take on the challenge of either 50 or 100 miles. The races filled up quickly and we were delighted to see many familiar faces returning from the NDW2011, the TP100 2012 and those hardy few who had run the SDW100 just 6 weeks prior. In…

SDW 100 2012 Race Report

The South Downs are a special place to a lot of people. They’ve recently been classified as one of our national parks and rightly so. As you drive south in the direction of the coast anywhere between Winchester and Eastbourne, it appears as though a giant wave of land has rolled in from the sea and it never ceases to put a smile on my face. When Jen Jackson announced in 2011 that she wanted to pass the South Downs Way Race on to someone else, I sent her a long email explaining why I hoped she might…

Thames Path 100 2012 Race Report

'There's no such thing as an easy 100 miler' The inaugural Thames Path 100 was an epic weekend filled with all the typical highs and lows of a 100 mile race. It contained incredible performances from the front runners posting blistering times, insipiring tales of triumph over adversity by runners from all sections of the field and the disappointment for some of an elusive finish. One thing is for sure, however easy a 100 mile race may look on paper, there is nothing easy about covering 100 miles…
